Chair Yoga is the term generally used to describe a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair, or standing, using the chair for support. Chair Yoga is specifically for those who would like the benefits of yoga, but for whom a standard yoga class is not available. Chair Yoga is taught as a way to achieve physical and mental fitness and is beneficial regardless of your flexibility. Chair Yoga benefits include improved strength, improved flexibility, reduced stress and improved mental clarity. Class taught by Margaret Hurlbut Vosburgh, Certified & Registered Yoga Instructor.
Hatha Yoga is based on the three principles of breathing, exercise, and meditation. A typical Hatha Yoga class will involve a set of yoga poses; sitting, standing, lying on a yoga mat, breathing techniques, followed by a period of rest to rejuvenate the mind and body. Benefits of Hatha Yoga include greater strength, flexibility, focus, improved cardiovascular health, reduced stress and improved balance. Class taught by Margaret Hurlbut Vosburgh, Certified & Registered Yoga Instructor.

Strength, Stretch & Tone with Anita Lower level of the Center for Active Living. ____________________________________________________________
This is an intermediate/advanced class. Start with a warm- up to get our bodies warm and moving in different directions. Anita chooses upbeat music from the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s. Then move into 20 minutes of strength training using work out bands or hand weights. Move onto 15 minutes of cardio which is just a lot of movement to fun music. Anita alternates balance in our day, or lower body leg work which sometimes includes lunges and squats. We sometimes use the mini yoga balls and leg bands for hip work. We end with a 5 minute cool down, and some light stretching. This is a challenging, but fun class! Anita is a certified personal trainer with years of experience leading active older adults in group exercise classes.
SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) with Jill Lower level of the Center for Active Living. ____________________________________________________________
This is an intermediate class. We focus on strengthening and maintaining our muscles, improving balance and flexibility, and our social wellbeing. Jill starts by warming up and stretching our muscles and getting our heart pumping while listening to upbeat music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. After stretching, we move to range of motion exercises, then to mini yoga balls for hand-eye coordination activities. We use hand weights for strength work. Sometimes we pull out balance pads to add an extra challenge for balance moves. Jill uses the walking track that goes around the group exercise area for about 10 minutes of cardio walking. She ends the time with a cool down, stretching, and deep breathing. This is a fun, social class! Jill is certified in SAIL, and has a decade of experience teaching Silver Sneakers.
Piano & Hors D’oeuvres ____________________________________________________________
Join us for monthly piano nights here at the CAL! Jill and volunteers pick a theme, food, and table décor. Local pianist Cindy Anderson joins us and ties her music into the theme, and we talk about the music, theme and we all leave with a full tummy, heart, and more knowledgeable about the theme of the night. We dress up our main room, turn down the lights, and create a beautiful ambiance for talking with friends both old and new. This program is available due to grant funding to pay for our musician’s time and talent. We generally charge $5 to cover food costs (registration is required). Any donations beyond the $5 goes directly back to CAL programming. We thank you for your generosity!
